Lady Siren Song here with a review for The Great Discord's sophomore album The Rabbit Hole! In its entirety, I really loved the whole album. It is a great blend of metal/rock/pop with vocals that go from ethereal to aggressive and the instruments are played with precision by all members. I do believe Fia even tickled the ivories for this album. The band as a whole is so versatile, that pretty much ANYONE would find something to like on this album. It is an expertly crafted masterpiece!
Mayhem’s Five Ground Shakers
Noire – One of my favorites on the album. Has a very hard rock beat, but also an infusion of pop. You could totally dance to this song. But it’s still hard, with Fia adding her growling vocals at certain points.
Darkest Day – The first single released off the album. The verses are extremely melodic, guitars sound beautiful, but then the crunchy riff and bass kicks into the pre-chorus, while the actual chorus picks up speed. A fantastic mix of tempo changes. Drums are masterful. Aksel is certainly one of the best drummers out there.
Cadence – This has a great dance beat, but the song has the components of a great anthem. Vocals are beautiful!
Red Rabbit- Aggressive and powerful! I get a sense of teasing in this song “I said down boy.”
Omen-Smooth guitar riffs and stunning drum and bass work. The video shows Fia and the rabbit dancing to the choruses in the song. The chorus does indeed have a very flowing dance beat.
I shift gears to talk about the opening song, Dimman. When I first heard this song, the FIRST thing it reminded me of was a film by Tim Burton with music by Danny Elfman. Chilling and dark, but absolutely gorgeous. The vocal harmonization is beautiful.
The second full length album for this talented band shows a serious amount of growth both vocally, instrumentally and in production. Although, to be quite honest, this band is already top notch in skill, so it doesn’t need to grow too much. ;-) I think the goal was to appeal to as many audiences as possible. With this album, you can certainly hear that. People that listen to rock, pop, metal, and other genres, can definitely find something to enjoy with this album.
With regard to the characters. The character of Fia, was a representation of darkness. Those things in life that represented what we all struggle with daily: depression, anger, grief, stress, frustration, etc. The character of Ire is a representation of rage. But, what I feel is VERY interesting with Ire, is that despite her rage and anger, she also displays a vulnerable side. Songs like Neon Dreaming portray that vulnerability amongst rain drops, and a circus like waltz time signature. The first time I listened to it, I got chills and felt like crying. The lyrics describe feeling like there was a sense of being mislead and heartbroken. The mix of children giggling towards the latter half of the song, gives the sense of time passing with the song. Perhaps the hurt or disappointment started young. The vocals are strong and delicate and while it is their first ballad, it holds a very special place with me and I think it will resonate with many.
I think this album would be great for new listeners to start with only because I feel it has more variety and it has that multi-genre draw to it. Their first album is more straight forward and metal based. So those that want to hear serious pure power at its best, check out Duende! But both albums deserve a listen and I really think this band is going to really make a name for itself, and I believe they will be able to expand touring to perhaps as far as the US. ;-) Go give The Red Rabbit a listen and as always, let us here at Mayhem Music Network know you thoughts!
