Hey Mayhem! Long time no see. Lady Siren Song back with my review of the new Motionless in White album, Graveyard Shift. I will admit, I am a fairly new fan to MIW. Raven had made the suggestion to check them out. So glad I did! But it was not one of their new songs that got me hooked, but one of their old songs. ‘Wasp’ is my favorite MIW song. A very sexy rhythm but still dark and dramatic. Chris Motionless also displays his versatility with vocals by keeping it clean through the whole song. And I was soon to learn just how great his skills are.
The much anticipated ‘Graveyard Shift,’ is a very heavy mix of songs. Many of them, true to form, have melodic choruses. Guitars and bass are strong and solid, and drums are fast and powerful.
Mayhem’s Ground Shakers
1. Soft – What can I say about this song…it’s in your face, fast, heavy and kicks ass. That’s why it’s #1 on my gym playlist. But it’s very interesting and creative to hear a band with a song this heavy, have a melodic chorus mixed in. A nice demonstration of Chris’s vocal skills. Guitars at times, played at warp speed and screeching to add a unique twist. Drums and bass powerful, fast and perfectly synchronized.
2. Queen for Queen – This one is awesome! It’s a musical chess game. It’s heavy yet you could dance to it. Chorus again is very melodic. Adding the techno touches during production had a great effect. Love the rhythm of all the instruments together.
3. Untouchable – This is an anthem song. Something I could imagine being played in a stadium during a football game. But a perfect song to bang your head to.
4. Eternally Yours – Love the guitar intro! Beautiful work. Very heavy song, vocals are primarily in screams, but then again, the chorus shifts and becomes very melodic and vocals are in belting style. Guitar and bass riffs are very heavy and well synchronized.
5. LOUD (Fuck It) – Vocals are incredible! Switching between Marilyn Manson-like moments, to power screams, to just power belting. Chris Motionless has a gift with his voice. There are many singers who stick to either screaming or clean vocals, but to use 3-4 different style singing techniques in one song is inspiring. But you can totally dance to this song too! It has a great beat to it, but still remains heavy.
I am fairly new to Motionless in White. But I have to say that the music is consistent in execution, has great beats and I love the vocals. They have been around for over 10 years and they are getting better and better with each new album. I have not had the opportunity to see them play live, but I am going to make it a priority to see them when they are in my area. If you haven’t had a chance to check them out, definitely give them a listen! You won’t be disappointed!
