Wild Sallee: Live Show Review
Hey Everyone, Raven here with another live show review. Growing up in small towns I often had to drive hours to the nearest city to hear a good rock or metal show. This year a few locals have begun to change the game for us here on Mayhem's Midwest Homefront. Last Saturday our Iola, KS branch of Rent A Center hosted a live rock show in front of their store in the parking lot. Featuring local Iola, KS rock artists Led Astray as well as EdgeOverEdge of Cherryvale, KS and the focus of this review Wild Sallee of Oklahoma City, OK. Due to weather the show was ended early so we headed out to The Time Out Tavern in Iola, Ks to get a better look at Wild Sallee, and catch a kickass performance from [CMND] (Command) of Independence, Ks who was scheduled to appear at the earlier show that afternoon.
Surprising both our most seasoned music veterans and our metal extremist, Wild Sallee's dual performances in a single day spoke volumes for their passion and skill. On first looks this group of musicians leaves you with the impression that they'll be playing classic rock, in the vein of ZZ Top. But that is not what we got. Not at all. What we got instead was some old school bluesy thrash metal.
Ripping into us from start to finish, unlike their song "The Game", Wild Sallee showed us they were not playing around. Kicking down that sick beat on the drums with an intensity I have yet to see on a main stage was Jerry "Butcher" Mcaul. The ferocity and ease with which he played had us banging our heads and left us astounded. Not just a skilled guitarist but a true performer to boot John "Westcoast" Wild is truly just that...Wild. Leaving the stage multiple times to join the crowd and pump us up, his wildest moment came during their encore performance at the Time Out Tavern when he came into the crowd, sat on a man's lap and continued to play the song being performed. Topping out this trio of destructive desires with a voice that is unmistakable and bass skills that'll thump your heart was Tim "Uno" Sallee. Bringing to mind some of our favorite singers like Chuck Billy, Sully Erna and our beloved Lemmy Kilmister, Tim Sallee is the next to be added to our list. It is safe to say that any old school Godsmack, Pantera and Testament fans would love the monster that is Wild Sallee.
