Ghost – POPESTAR (EP)
For the start of their North American “Popestar” tour, Papa Emeritus III and the Nameless Ghouls have created a magical new EP as an extension of their album Meliora. These guys ALWAYS deliver when it comes to delivering incredible 70’s – 80’s style music with their unique signature…but with a few surprises.
The EP opens with the song ‘Square Hammer,’ which is a heavy rock song with a catchy pop feel to it. Opens with keys and strong drum work and shifts into those heavy guitar riffs (palm-muted at times). You could get up and dance or bang your head to this one! I was instantly hooked on this as soon as I heard it.
Nocturnal Me. REALLY like this one. The beat is a bit…naughty. Bass work is amazing, as well as skilled, rolling drum beats…wait, that’s why it’s naughty sounding. Papa always says the “good drums and good bass gets your ass moving.” I heard a little influence of Queen here. Still has a 70’s rock sound with classy guitar work and playful vocals.
I Believe – primarily keyboards and vocals. This is a VERY different song for Ghost in my opinion. Low tempo, no guitars or drums with the exception of subtle cymbal taps. Has a distinct 80’s genre sound to it.
Missionary Man – This cover is an awesome cover of the Eurythmics song. It rocks but has a quirky feel to it. And come on, you have to like the harmonica solo!
Bible- Amazing!!!!! You have to hear it for yourself. Just some thoughts though. This is a slow paced “ballad-like” song. But it still rocks. Starts with creation and ends with the fall of Babylon. What I was really impressed with was Papa’s voice. It is always incredible. But in this song, it is very dramatic and powerful…beautiful.
I think the EP definitely is an “extension” of Meliora. However, I think the band may be turning in a slightly different direction stylistically. Whatever Papa and the Nameless Ghouls come up with for their fourth full length album, I have no doubt it will be incredible as always.
